Sergey Sirotkin joins Renault as test driver and will drive in Russia

Sergey Sirotkin has joined Renault as their test driver and will make his debut for the team during Practice One in Russia.

The Russian had previously held the role at Sauber where he drove in practice for the team in Sochi in 2014.

Sirotkin will take the place of Kevin Magnussen for the opening practice session at the former Winter Olympic venue this weekend.

I do watch F1, but I'd rather that senile old fart Bernie was out.

This season is looking to be fairly interesting now that they've got rid of that really bad elimination qualifying. Obviously apart from Mercedes being at the front, but they are justified in doing so after developing the best car and engine; but Ferrari and Red Bull are catching up.

My eye is on Manor, and specifically Pascal Wehrlein, as the team has potential to score points this year and they also have the best looking car. The colours of red and white are overused as hell nowadays, but it really works with the blue.

@joe_alker I agree with you... Manor are showing a good result this season. I am surprised with Pascal, with what he has shown over the last 3 races, I think he qualified in 16th at one point, which I think was amazing. I know he caused a red flag in China Q1, but at some point we all make mistakes; how was meant to know where that dip was, this was also his first time racing on the track. I know what you mean about Bernie!

@whistlehead That is true, they might build up more advertising as the season goes on. They did last year. But funny you should mention that, because I have noticed that the Manor drivers are using their own helmets, for example if you look at the picture above, Pascal is using is helmet that he used when he was former test driver for Mercedes.

I offer my support to Manor, I hope that they do get some points over this season.

I agree that the season didn't get off to a good start, with the elimination style qualifying. They were going to put it back to 2015 style in Bahrain, then they didn't. But they did for China, which now is working better!

Another driver that I support is Lewis Hamilton. So far this season, he hasn't got good start. In Australia, he couldn't get to grips with the one clutch system, although he got Pole position, he finished 2nd. In Bahrain, same thing happened with the clutch, then came into a collision with Bottas (77) on turn 1 lap 1, and Finished 3rd. In China he had 5 grid place penalty due to a gearbox change, then he had no power, and set no time for China so started in 22nd, he finished the race in 7th. I hope that there is a better result for him in Russia.

That is a beautifully clean livery - I'm amazed hey have the money to run an F1 team with so little advertising.

That's why they have Rio Haryanto, the Indonesian government essentially pay for his seat. Pascal Wehrlein also had the influence of Mercedes to help him get the seat, but of course he does have a proven track record, being the 2015 DTM champion.

And there was always this monstrosity

To answer the original questions: my favourite race has got to be the Monaco GP and concerning teams, I'm a Ferrarista  :D

Haven't got a favourite between Kimi and Seb though.

My thoughts on the season so far: Qualifying has been awful so far, but thankfully they've changed the format now. Been quite a good season apart from that though, Ferrari are very nearly on the same level as Mercedes and Red Bull are surprisingly fast too.

Opinion on Wehrlein: I think he's a brilliant driver, but my opinion might be biased because he's half Mauritian  :P

Monaco is a good race... but can never master the track in the F1 game lol. I like Red Bull, and I am pleased with the resault of them!

I like all the tracks in some way or another, the one I probably don't like is Austria as I find it too easy. But I can't wait for Baku, and interested to find out what this city circuit is like!

I tend to prefer the more traditional 'real' tracks, like Melbourne, Catalunya, Silverstone, Monaco, Canada, Spa, Hockenheim, Nurburgring, Imola, Monza etc. Few of the new tracks appeal to me, except maybe the Austin CoTA and Mexico City. The move to countries like those in the Middle East (essentially oil-rich countries that can pay Bernie) is disappointing, especially seen as all the tracks are too similar and too boring. Abu Dhabi isn't a bad track, but the others are. I also don't see why there is a race in Azerbaijan, a country with little motorsport heritage and a questionable human rights record.

F1 is failing because all the good tracks are getting dropped, ticket prices are too high, and Sky Sports. Just look at the crowds races like Mexico and every European race draws.

I understand where your coming from, and its your opinion. This is why I wanted to make this topic, as I know that people has different views. I do like the traditional tracks, but I also like the city tracks as its a change sometimes. But I top faviourte track is Spa as its the longest, and allows the cars to have different wings, to cope with the long, steap, up hill right turn that is well known as 'Eau Rouge' (turn 3).

Eau Rouge can be found in this video:

Shame no Crashtor this year, would have been a new highscore for him at that section of track. Here are pictures of it paved with the temporary tarmac https://twitter.com/gwaygood/status/717317976303804420

Favourite tracks on the calendar this year have got to be Spielberg, Spa and Hockenheim (German GP is back! :D ). All we need now is a French GP if Magny-Cours ever gets up to F1 standard again, a Dutch GP at Zandvoort (for Verstappen to have a win at a home GP! :D ) and have the Nürburgring has the European GP again.

I change what teams/drivers I support most years so this year is Ferrari/Seb/Kimi along with Max 'No!' Verstappen and Pascal Wehrlein. Agree with Joe that Bernie needs to take a hike and stop having GPs in these countries run by dubious people with little interest anything but money. Currently I watch the Channel 4 coverage and as soon as Sky gets the monopoly and F1 is behind a paywall in the UK, I will not supporting Motley Murdoch and instead watch it via an Acestream link kindly donated by someone on r/forumula1 or just watch Rossi, hopefully, win his tenth MotoGP title on the BT Sport player :P  (I have broadband with BT already so the web player and app is only a few quid a month).

Gearbox penalty adds to Vettel’s Russian woes

Grid penalty for Sebastian Vettel following gearbox change!

Lewis Hamilton also gets new gearbox, but won't face a penalty!

Sebastian Vettel is set to drop five places on the grid for Sunday’s 2016 Formula 1 Russian Grand Prix after an unscheduled gearbox change on his Ferrari.

The blow comes after Vettel also lost an hour of running in Friday’s second Sochi practice session with a suspected electrical problem on his SF16-H, leaving team mate Kimi Raikkonen to conduct the bulk of Ferrari’s programme.

"The good news is that the balance of our car feels quite good and the track is suiting us more and more." Sebastian Vettel

What are your thoughts of the aeroscreen testing in FP1, on Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull?

3DIlGIdkmajQ6ufwPbb3_BTRm1hw2yhA.jpeg

I think that the aeroscreen is alright, in the ways that it suites the car visually. But as I herd today, can it effect the cooling of the car? Which is why that they only had to run it for 1 lap. Will it slow the driver if they need to get out quickly? Or, Will it block an escape route for the driver? (think back to Australia when Alonso had that crash, he only got out with a small gab from the cockpit!) How will it effect the cars for 2017? Send your thoughts below!
